Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profiles?

By Bryno · Published · Updated

Short answer

OpenAI has not published anything saying ChatGPT uses Google Business Profile data, and we found no documentation of a direct Google Business Profile feed. OpenAI does document that ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, sometimes third-party search providers, and partner data described in its 2024 launch post, including unnamed providers of nearby business listings. Profile details might reach ChatGPT indirectly, but no one outside OpenAI can confirm how. Keep your profile and website accurate and consistent.

What has OpenAI actually documented?

Established

OpenAI describes several routes by which information reaches ChatGPT's search answers. None of the pages we reviewed on October 14, 2026 mentions Google Business Profile. Here is what each route is, in OpenAI's own terms.

Documented routes for business information into ChatGPT
RouteWhat OpenAI saysNames a provider?

Third-party search providersChatGPT search sometimes partners with other search providers and sends them rewritten queries [1]Links to Microsoft's and Shopify's privacy policies [1]
Partner content and data providersOpenAI's 2024 launch post said ChatGPT search uses content provided directly by partners, and that OpenAI partnered with news and data providers for categories including maps [3]Names news publishers it worked with, but no maps provider [3]
Local information providersChatGPT may share location with trusted third-party providers for local information such as nearby business listings [1]No
Restaurant reservationsChatGPT may show availability from OpenTable, Resy or Yelp, depending on the restaurant [1]Yes: OpenTable, Resy, Yelp
Local services quote partners (beta)Approved partners provide a feed of local business records that ChatGPT indexes for search [4]No partners named

Does OpenAI name Google as a source?

Established

Not in the documentation we reviewed. OpenAI's ChatGPT search help page points readers to the Microsoft privacy statement and the Shopify privacy policy to learn how search providers may process queries [1]. It doesn't name Google as a search or data provider, and it doesn't say which provider is used for which kind of question.

For local results, OpenAI says ChatGPT may share a person's location with trusted third-party providers that help with local information such as nearby business listings, without naming them [1]. OpenAI's 2024 launch post said it partnered with news and data providers to add up-to-date information and new visual designs for categories including maps, again without naming a maps provider [3].

So the honest answer is that we don't know where ChatGPT's map and listing data comes from. Listing Microsoft's privacy statement suggests Microsoft is among ChatGPT's search providers, but that is an inference from a link, not a statement about business listings.

Is there any documented direct business data feed?

Established

There is one, and it is narrow. OpenAI's developer documentation describes a Local services Get Quote program, currently in beta and being tested with approved partners [4]. Partners provide a feed of local business records, including address, location, phone number, website and a listing URL, and ChatGPT indexes those records for search [4].

As we read the spec, it is written for service platforms that operate a quote-request plugin and list many businesses, not for individual businesses, and OpenAI doesn't say which partners take part. It is not described as connected to Google Business Profile. It does show that structured business listings from approved partners can reach ChatGPT search.

What does Google say about where profile data goes?

Established

Google documents its side. Google says it displays business profiles on Google Search and Google Maps, and on third-party websites and applications through APIs such as those on the Google Maps Platform [5]. That means there is a documented route by which profile information can appear outside Google.

Google's page doesn't say whether OpenAI or ChatGPT uses those APIs, and OpenAI hasn't said so either. Google also says the information in profiles is compiled from several sources, including crawled web content such as a business's official website, contributions from users and business owners, and Google's own interactions with the business [5].

How could your profile details still end up in ChatGPT?

The following are possibilities, not documented facts. They explain why keeping your profile accurate is still sensible even though no direct link is confirmed.

  • The same facts on your own website. OAI-SearchBot can crawl your website [2], so details that match your profile can reach ChatGPT that way.
  • Search provider results. ChatGPT search sometimes sends queries to third-party search providers [1]; what those results contain about local businesses isn't documented by OpenAI.
  • Unnamed listing providers. The trusted providers of nearby business listings [1] may compile data from many places; OpenAI doesn't say which.
  • Pages a user points to. If someone asks ChatGPT about a specific page, it may visit that page with its ChatGPT-User agent [2].

How can you see what ChatGPT relied on?

Established

You can't see ChatGPT's data pipeline, but you can see its citations. OpenAI says responses that use web search may include citations, and that a Sources view shows cited sources and other relevant links [1]. On iOS and Android, relevant results may also include a map [1].

If ChatGPT repeats details that appear on your Google Business Profile but not on your website, that is a clue, not proof. The same facts are often copied across directories, review sites and maps services, so several sources could explain the match. Use the pattern to decide which listing to correct, not to conclude where ChatGPT's data came from.

Is a Google Business Profile still worth maintaining?

Recommended practice

Yes, for reasons that are documented. Google's guidance for its own AI features, AI Overviews and AI Mode, includes checking that your Business Profile information is up to date [6]. Google also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results [7].

For ChatGPT specifically, the documented lever is your website: OpenAI says that to make a site eligible for inclusion, you allow OAI-SearchBot to crawl it and make sure your host or CDN allows traffic from OpenAI's published searchbot IP addresses, while placement isn't guaranteed [1]. The practical approach is to treat your website as the main source of truth and keep your profile identical to it. For how a profile on Google differs from an AI-focused profile, see AI business listing vs Google Business Profile.

Practical next steps

  1. Review your Google Business Profile for accuracy: name, address or service area, phone, hours, categories and website link.
  2. Compare those details with your website, line by line, and fix any differences.
  3. Confirm your robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot so ChatGPT search can read your website directly.
  4. If you run a restaurant, check your listings on any reservation platforms you use, since OpenAI names OpenTable, Resy and Yelp.
  5. Ask ChatGPT about your business with web search on, and open the Sources to see what it actually cites.
